In 1888 the then called A.L. Tubbs Winery was constructed. This unique winery was one of the few 19th century Napa Valley wineries made from stone and not wood. This unique architectural element as well as it’s construction on a hillside gave now named Chataeu Montelena a unique advantage and unique quality of production among Napa Valley wineries. The natural insulation gave this winery the ability to produce unique and well received wines enjoyed by many throughout the region in the early days of Napa Valley wine production. After being sold and changing hands, the winery itself eventually began a new chapter in the 1970s. Jim Barette opened up this new chapter by giving the winery new state of the art wine making equipment and planting new vineyards. This new generation of wine producers put Chateau Montelena on path to become the great winery it is today. The most important moment arguably in Chateau Montelena’s story and the story of Napa Valley wine more generally is the 1976 wine tasting at the Inter-Continental Hotel in Paris. This international wine tasting event brought together only the finest wines from the finest wineries in the entire world. Since the Prohibition in the United States had slowed down wine production in the region, this wine tasting was a very big deal. Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay won the event and this moment would catapult Northern California wines on to the world stage as preeminent wines worthy of recognition around the world. It was this moment that the Napa Valley was christened as a legitimate destination for all things wine and a place on par with France and Italy. Due to Chateau Montelena’s 1973 Chardonnay the Napa Valley was now a wine destination the world over.
Chateau Montelena used this moment and continued to produce wonderful wines into the present day. By mixing together the perfect and complimentary elements of old world and new world wine production, Chateau Montelena makes delicious Chardonnays and Zinfendels. Modern technologies are used to crush and de stem and press the grapes only to then transfer the grapes to classic French Oak barrels that beautifully bring out the delicious taste of each and every batch.
