California Academy of Sciences

San Francisco is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. The winding streets, incredible views and beautiful buildings combine to make even a simple walk on any given day a breathtaking experience. San Francisco is also home to a number of destinations that people from all over the world flock to see. While the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf are among the most popular, a number of destinations attract people to them. The California Academy of Sciences is one of these special destinations.

The California Academy of Sciences is an incredible sight to see for science lovers and not alike. Beginning in the mid 19th century and in 2008 being completely rebuilt, the California Academy of Sciences is the epicenter of all things related to the natural world. The California Academy of Sciences is one of the largest natural history museums in the entire world and is home to over 26 million specimens. This 400,000 square foot building in Golden Gate Park is the product of a complete rebuild due to the damage the original building sustained during the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. This new, environmentally friendly building was designed by Renzo Piano and incorporates the newest cutting edge environmentally friendly elements. The roof itself is green containing 1.7 million California native plants. The California Academy of Sciences is simultaneously a research organization of scientists committed to conservation research in many different fields each one with a strong focus on environmental concerns. This has been the basis of the California Academy of Sciences since it became the first scientific society of its kind in the Western USA. What attracts visitors however, is the large and fascinating museums. These museums are broken into four major exhibits – The Kimball Natural History Museum, Morrison Planetarium, Rainforests of the World and the Steinhart Aquarium. Each section features something special and unique. In the Kimball Natural History Museum, you can see many different interesting and unique specimens and watch scientists work in the popular “Project Lab” section. The Morrison Planetarium is the world’s largest digital planetarium. The Rainforests of the world exhibit is a 90 foot glass dome with rainforest like conditions and the Steinhart Aquarium is an impressive array of oceanic wildlife. All these attractions and more are waiting for you at the California Acadmey of Sciences. Lucky for you, Apex is here to help.
