Japanese Tea Garden

san_fransisco_fog_pagoda_japanese_tea_gardenSan Francisco’s large and beautiful Golden Gate Park is full of many treasures worth exploring. One of the most intriguing is the Japanese Tea Garden. As the oldest public Japanese Tea Garden in the entire United States, this part of Golden Gate Park is truly a treasure. Originally constructed in 1894 as part of the World’s Fair the Japanese Tea Garden would grow in size and prestige. Japanese immigrant and gardner, Makoto Hagiwara originally came up with the idea for the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park, personally overseeing it until his death. After he passed in 1925 Hagiwara’s daughter Takano Hagiwara and her children oversaw the garden. While rising anti-Japanese sentiments during World War II resulted in the mass internment of Japanese, including Hagiwara, after the War and the signing of the Japanese Peace Treaty in San Francisco in 1951 the garden took on a new life and expansion. The garden itself is full of a wide range of beautiful natural Japanese plants, trees and flowers. Since the beginning of the Japanese Tea Garden, the main staple destination has been The Tea House. The Tea House is where traditional Japanese tea ceremonies occur. The Tea House itself offers a number of different teas as well as snacks. The Treasure Tower Pagoda is a beautiful Buddhist shrine in the Japanese Tea Garden. This Pagoda was originally installed in 1915. The Drum Bridge is a commonly found piece of architecture in Chinese and Japanese gardens. The Drum Bridge in the Japanese Tea Garden, like others around the world, are highly arched thereby reflecting a full drum like circle in the water. The Rock Garden is also a must see – following traditional Japanese rock patterns oriented by color, shape and size this beautiful garden is truly stunning. The wide range of beautiful and stunning Japanese trees and other wildlife will make any visitor feel like they have transported to another country entirely.
