Exploratorium

exploratorium_1One of the most fascinating science oriented places in the United States is located right in the heart of San Francisco. That place is called The Exploratorium. The Exploratorium is as unique as it is fascinating and as stunning as it is educational. Referred to as a public learning laboratory or a participatory museum, The Exploratorium is a place where visitors are able to participate in the exhibits and informally learn as they experience the museum itself. The Exploratorium was originally opened by physicist Frank Oppenheimer in 1969 at the Palace of Fine Arts. Originally working on the infamous Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer eventually turned towards education and developed a number of different experiments and participatory exhibits that students could engage with to learn about science and provoke curiosity. With the help of a grant from the San Francisco Foundation Oppenheimer was able to open up the Exploratorium. The premise was simple and lives on into today: create participatory exhibits that teach people and help them become excited about science. In 2013 the Exploratorium moved to its current location at Piers 15 and 17, in a beautiful state of the art 330,000 square foot building. Inside this new, sustainable Exploratorium building at Piers 15 and 17 there are over 600 exhibits that cover many different scientific areas. The Osher West Gallery engages with Human Behavior and is home to a number of exhibits that engage visitors with memory, emotion and judgement. The South Gallery engages people in more “hands on making” type exhibitions near the Exploratoriums very own exhibit workshop. Here visitors are engaged in processes of building and teach about the finer scientific aspects of making things and do-it-yourself projects. The Bechtel Central Gallery focuses on seeing and listening – this section is usually considered the classic wing of the exploratorium and investigates light, color and sound. The East Gallery is home to the life sciences exhibits and engage with the immediate local environment as well as living eco-systems more generally. The Fisher Bay Observatory is a new wing to the Exploratorium and allows visitors to see the bay and sky in real time and even has sensors connected to the water and air quality that allows visitors to engage with the levels of pollution in the immediate surroundings. The outdoor gallery, public open space and two restaurants (Seaglass Restaurant and Seismic Joint Cafe) all combine together to make the Exploratorium. This unique and interactive destination is a must see in San Francisco – and Apex Luxury Transportation can bring you there.
